Panyaza Lesufi has been re-elected as Gauteng Premier, following the official support of his nomination by the DA leader Mike Moriarty who seconded the nomination.

In the provincial legislature sitting on Friday, Lesufi was elected unopposed while former Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Morakane Mosupyoe was elected unopposed as speaker of the Gauteng Legislature.

Lesufi has been a member of the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee since 2007 and served in the NEC Education Sub-committee.

In July 2018, he was elected as Deputy Chairperson of the ANC in Gauteng and assumed the position of Chairperson of the ANC in Gauteng on 26 June 2022 at the provincial conference held in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.

Support for the ANC in the province has declined from 50% in 2019 to just over 36%, with most municipalities across the province being governed through metros such as Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Tshwane.

Earlier on Friday DA leader John Steenhuisen said in a press briefing that his party has signed a letter of intent with three other parties including the ANC, where the parties will support each other in metros such as Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
