Lobby group slam reappointment of Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga

Must read

Education lobby group Equal Education (EE) has given the reappointment of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga the thumbs down, blaming her for the many failings within the department.

It has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to make her performance contract public.

“Motshekga’s reappointment as basic education minister, for a third term, means that she must now demonstrate the urgency in meeting her mandate, that President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke of when announcing the new members of cabinet on Wednesday.”

EE general secretary Noncedo Madubedube said, according to Ramaphosa, the new administration that Motshekga forms part of, must be “capable” and “efficient”.

Madubedube said pupils, parents and teachers could no longer afford “unsatisfactory” work from Motshekga.

“Motshekga is a public servant and the public must be able to measure performance against the outcomes stipulated in her performance contract.

“Motshekga’s contract ought to include: Proper compliance with the Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure that includes meeting the deadlines that the law stipulates, timeously releasing coherent provincial infrastructure progress reports, ensuring that MECs undertake the rigorous planning and capacity building necessary to comply with the norms and standards and urgently effecting intergovernmental co-operation.”
