The ANC says it stands in solidarity with millions of people around the world in commemorating World Down Syndrome Day, a day that it reaffirms its collective responsibility to build a society where every individual is treated with dignity, respect and equality.
The country is celebrating Human Rights Day at various events on Saturday.
“This is not just a day of awareness; it is a call to mobilise South Africans in action against exclusion, discrimination and systemic neglect that continue to marginalise individuals with Down Syndrome and their families,” said ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri.
“Our struggle for freedom was not merely about dismantling apartheid laws; it was about building a just society where the full human potential of every individual is recognised. True liberation remains incomplete if children with Down syndrome are still denied quality education, if families are left without adequate support, and if workplaces continue to exclude capable individuals simply because they are different.”
The party has paid tribute to the parents, caregivers and communities who stand unwavering in their love and advocacy for people with Down syndrome.
It said their resilience embodied the spirit of Ubuntu, and their fight for inclusion must be met with a government and society that is equally committed to breaking barriers.
The ANC has called for greater investment in specialised education, improved healthcare access and strengthened policies that promote the inclusion of everyone.
“On this World Down Syndrome Day, let us commit to a South Africa that truly embraces diversity and where no child is ever left behind, where every family is supported and where every person, regardless of ability, is empowered to live a life of dignity,” Bhengu-Motsiri said in a statement.
“Let us take conscious steps against exclusion and its stigmas to ensure that our communities respect the rights to justice, equality, and humanity for all.”
