Former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane quit politics on Wednesday, saying that her rights have been violated during her time of serving the country.
In a resignation letter to the Economic Freedom Fighters, Mkhwebane said: “I have encountered challenges and felt let down by the current South African judiciary, Parliament, executive and more especially the mainstream media who seem to have been tasked to target and attack my character.”
“Politics is not my space and that is what I said when I joined,” said Mkhwebane.
“Being in Parliament is terrible… when you don’t have numbers, there is nothing you can do,” she added.
Mkhwebane said she would spend time with her family and was weighing up her options about what to do in the future.
The EFF has seen a number of high-profile resignations since the May elections, with many joining the MK Party.
Mkhwebane, who joined the party a year ago, has also tendered her resignation to Parliamentary Speaker Thoko Didiza.
