Motshekga: Plans underway in DRC to repatriate injured SANDF soldiers

Must read

Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, has announced that South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members injured in clashes with M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will soon return home.

The mission to bring back over 100 injured and ill SANDF soldiers was canceled last week.

Motshekga made the announcement during the funeral of rifleman Richard Chokoe, one of 14 SANDF members who lost their lives in the conflict.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, the minister underscored the government’s commitment to supporting soldiers in the field and pledged assistance to the families of fallen soldiers.

“We expect the injured soldiers to return soon. We are also in direct communication with those on other missions in the DRC,” Motshekga said.

“Our soldiers encounter formidable challenges in the field. It is our duty to ensure they receive the necessary support for their safe return. For those still on mission, we will continue to collaborate closely to provide comprehensive support.”

Motshekga expressed confidence in South Africa’s international relations and highlighted positive developments in the DRC situation, endorsed by the UN and the African Union.

The evacuation process has encountered delays, with M23 rebels insisting on using only the route through the Rwandan border.

South Africa has hesitated due to concerns about potential confrontations with Rwandan authorities.

The United Nations will oversee the evacuation, but the exact number of soldiers to be transported from Goma remains unconfirmed.
