FORMER mayor and ANC Ekurhuleni regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina has resigned as a councillor.

Masina’s resignation was confirmed by the party’s Gauteng provincial secretary Thembinkosi Nciza on Thursday afternoon.

Nciza said the party’s provincial working committee (PWC) met on Monday and received a report from the officials of the ANC in the province who met with Masina.

“This meeting was regarding what transpired at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council meeting earlier this month,” he said.

Masina was facing charges for ignoring an instruction to withdraw a motion of no confidence against DA mayor Tania Campbell in October.

The ANC said that single act brought the party into disrepute.

“The officials provided a report that comrade Mzwandile Masina will offer a public apology to members of the ANC and also that he has voluntarily decided to resign as a Councillor representing the ANC in the Ekurhuleni Council.”

“The PWC wishes comrade Mzwandile well on his endeavours and thanks him for leading one of the most stable, innovative and well run municipalities for the past (five) 5 years as a Mayor. The City of Ekurhuleni under the stewardship and exemplary leadership of comrade Mzwandile Masina and his collective was a model for good governance,” Nciza said.

ANC caucus in the City of Ekurhuleni legislature, with assistance of other parties in the legislature successfully placed a motion of no confidence against the DA mayor Campbell. But the provincial party executive committees said that was a move against their decision.

The resignation will give Masina an opportunity to focus his attention on the ambitions of leading the ANC as Treasurer-General.

Going into the 55th party elective conference to be held from 16 to 20 December in Nasrec, Masina received a total of 348 nominations for the role of treasurer-general against Benjamin Chauke who is leading with 552 and followed by Pule Mabe (428).
