Leo Brent Bozell III, United States President Donald Trump’s new ambassador to South Africa, has arrived in the country.

Reuters reported that US embassy officials said Bozell is expected to present his credentials to President Cyril Ramaphosa before formally taking up his post.

Bozell’s arrival comes as ties between Washington and Pretoria remain strained over South Africa’s foreign policy positions, including its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, and the Trump administration’s stance on South Africa, including a refugee programme aimed at minority citizens.

Bozell was confirmed by the US Senate on 18 December, according to the official US nominations record.

Reuters reported Bozell saying his priorities would include urging South Africa to end its ICJ case, advancing the administration’s refugee programme for minority South Africans, and promoting US business.
