ANC senior member Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has declined nomination to serve the party in the next Parliament.

Dlamini-Zuma who is Minister of Women, Youth and People with Disabilities wrote a letter addressed to the Electoral Committee head Kgalema Motlanthe on Friday, declining the invitation to interviews by the ruling party for its Parliamentary list.

The ANC veteran said that it would not be necessary to schedule the interview for the 2024 national list because she has taken the decision to retire from being a member of the country’s parliament.

Dlamini-Zuma’s decision not to go to Parliament may not be a surprise to some because on two occasions, in the current National Assembly, she refused to vote along party sparking fears that she could be hauled before the ANC’s disciplinary committee or even censured.

The first move was when she decided to vote with the opposition on the Phala Phala section 89 parliamentary report on President Cyril Ramaphosa which found that the president had a case to answer.

The second occasion was about her decision to stay away from the section 197 Parliamentary session which was meant to consider an ad hoc committee report on the removal of former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

The party reportedly considered taking her to the National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) for defying the party line in parliament.

Some have suggested her sudden decision as an ‘escape from a hot seat’, in light of her voting against the ruling party in two motions.

Whilst others have linked her actions as the start of her journey to the newly established MK party.
