THE North West ANC has recalled two mayors – Tshireletso Marabutse and Cliffton Groep from the Kagisano-Molopo Municipality and Naledi Local Municipality after an assessment showed that they can best serve the party elsewhere.

The ANC North West chairperson, Nono Maloyi, said as the ANC, they normally conduct assessments of their municipalities, including their caucuses. And they have concluded that they can use the expertise of some of their deployees in other municipalities.

“We are taking a person that we think has more capacity to do certain things, and we are taking that capacity and those expertise where they are needed most and taking the other one to deploy in another area where we think his expertise will be needed most,” he said.

He said they are quite happy moving forward and believe North West will never be the same again adding that there are other municipalities that are doing well, and there is no need for intervention.

“There are other municipalities where you need to build capacity. There are other municipalities where you need to work with the provincial government for it to come and also intervene and ensure that that municipality is on the right track,” Maloyi said.

Recently the NW Province also recalled the mayors of the Bojanala District Municipality, the City of Matlosana Local Municipality and the Greater Taung Local Municipality.

This was revealed during the ANC’s media briefing in Rustenburg yesterday, following the Provincial Executive Committee meeting over the weekend.

Tabling the consolidated general report on local government audit outcomes in parliament on Tuesday, it was found that not a single North West municipality obtained a clean audit report for the 2022/23 financial year.

North West municipalities cumulatively recorded R3,45 billion in irregular expenditure, while unauthorised expenditure topped R2,45 billion and R571 million was lost to wasteful expenditure.

The collective North West bulk Eskom debt stands at more than R3,05 billion, and another R2,54 billion is owed to water boards.
