After careful consideration, the Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has recommended nine people among 10 to fill vacancies on the National Youth Development Agency’s (NYDA) board.
The nine candidates will serve on the board for three years after they are appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“The report will go to the National Assembly for debate before it is sent to the president for him to select the candidates to serve on the board,” said committee chairperson Liezl van der Merwe.
The 10th candidate could not meet Section 9 (4) requirements of the amended NYDA Act because he is above 35-years-old.
Van der Merwe mentioned that it was important to acknowledge the significant challenges that youth unemployment posed to the country as well as the role played by NYDA in addressing those challenges.
“The Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities is dedicated to ensuring that the new board is composed of individuals who are committed, skilled, passionate, patriotic and representative of South Africa’s youth,” she said in a statement on Wednesday.
The committee received 1412 applications and only 20 candidates were shortlisted.
Van de Merwe said the process of selection was done through values and principles of fairness, transparency and accountability.
“It is essential to highlight that all candidates consented to participate in an open process, knowing the implications of their involvement,” she added.
They are Kelly Sandra Baloyi, Precious Thembisile Mahuwa, Wiseman Mfaniseni Mbatha, Bonga Siphesihle Makhanya, Sibusiso Makhathini, Irfaan Mangera, Sunshine Minenhle Myende, Busisiwe Nandipha Nxumalo and Xabiso Nicholas Nyati.
