THE Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, Beauty Dlulane, has noted with deep sense of sadness the passing of Papi Khomane the former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana soccer star.
The committee passed its deep condolences to the Khomane family, friends, and the broader sporting family.
“We are sad to lose a hero in this fashion. Our people need to be always vigilant on the roads particularly during this time where so many of our people will be travelling the length and breadth of our country.
“We are proud of what Papi Khomane achieved during his days as a professional sports person. He continued the life of being an exemplary professional and a role model to many aspiring football players. A true professional through and through, who never once attracted negative publicity even after football.
“We are saddened by this news and wish for the relatives strength during this time of hardship and hurt,” said Dlulane.
Khomane died in a car accident with his mother and uncle while driving down to KwaZulu-Natal last night. The accident occurred on the weekend that the Minister of Transport launched the road safety month.
In paying tribute to Khomane, Orlando Pirates said he was in their books between 1998 and 2007 during which time he also represented Bafana Bafana at the 2000 Afcon finals.
Khomane came from Jomo Cosmos and while at Pirates, he made over 150 appearances for the Bucs and also captained the club.
His father, Yster Khomane, also played for the Buccaneers in the late 70s and they were one of the rare father-son duos in the club’s history.
“The Club was informed by his father and another Bucs legend, Yster Khomane who confirmed that both his son and his wife, Rita Khomane were involved in a motor vehicle accident,” .
“Papi was a man of few words, but his presence on the pitch spoke volumes. His transformation from a quiet individual into a formidable leader during games was nothing short of inspirational”.
