Parliament starts its Weekly Committee Cluster Media Briefings programme on Monday to promote public accountability and openness.
Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said the initiative marked a pivotal development in the institution’s ongoing efforts to enhance engagement with the public and the media during its 7th term.
The programme seeks to highlight the critical role of parliamentary committees in driving legislative and oversight work.
By providing structured and regular updates, the initiative moved beyond traditional plenary session reporting to give a comprehensive view of Parliament’s activities.
Mothapo said the briefings aimed to foster a deeper understanding of how these committees ensured governance accountability, scrutinised legislative proposals and integrated public participation into democratic processes.
He said Parliament’s renewed focus on transparency underscored its commitment to facilitating informed public discourse and strengthening the trust between citizens and their representatives.
The inaugural briefing will feature four key oversight committees from the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces, each playing an essential role in ensuring financial integrity and promoting good governance.
Mothapo said these committees, which included finance, appropriations, the Auditor-General and Public Accounts were central to Parliament’s mandate of holding the executive accountable and ensuring effective resource management.
