Gauteng police authorities have confirmed the arrest of one suspect believed to be linked to the African National Congress (ANC) for the alleged murder of two uMkhonto weSizwe party members in Katlehong North, Ekurhuleni on Sunday night.

Brigadier Brenda Muridili, on Monday, said the two MKP members, who have been identified as Bongani Mkhwanazi (32) and Xolani Nzimande (40), were shot and killed during a dispute at Thwala Section in Katlehong North.

Muridili said that one victim died on the scene while the other was declared dead on arrival at the nearest hospital.

She confirmed a firearm and a knife were recovered on the scene, and said motive for the incident will form part of the subsequent investigations.

The case of two counts of murder has been allocated to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation and the suspect is expected to appear before court shortly.

Former finance minister and current MK party member, Des van Rooyen, commented to the media during his special vote in Khutshong, on the West rand, and said such a loss of life was unacceptable.

“Losing a life is something very serious. Our sincere condolences to the family. We hope that proper investigation will be done, so the culprits can be brought to book,” van Rooyen said.

This follows a violent encounter between the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ANC in Seshego, Limpopo last week, which left a 9 year old girl injured, recovering in hospital.

The South African Police Service has, however, assured the nation that it would monitor voting stations across the country, in order to ensure free and fair elections this week.
