Police launch a manhunt for killers of former SABC journalist Jeffrey Zikhali

Empangeni police have launched a manhunt for the killers of former eTV and SABC sports anchor and Kwa-Zulu Natal government communicator Jeffrey Zikhali who was shot and killed in an alleged hijacking incident on Friday night at Ndabayakhe in the Empangeni area.

Zikhali’s killing has sent shockwaves in the media fraternity and also in government circles and the police are out in full force to find the perpetrators who drove away in his vehicle.

Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the police were on routine patrol when they stumbled upon a body, cell phone and a driver’s licence which assisted them in identifying the man.

“He was declared dead on the scene. The motive of the killing and the suspect are unknown at this stage. Police are appealing to community members with any information that might assist to call the Empangeni police station or call the Crime Stop number on 0860 10111. Alternatively, tips can be communicated via the MySAPS app.”

Zikhali is a former eTV and SABC sports anchor and also served as a communicator for the KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

KZN Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, MEC Sipho Hlomuka has condemned Zikhali’s murder and has called on the public to assist police with information to ensure that those responsible for his murder are apprehended.

uMhlathuze Mayor, Xolani Gwezi, said Zikhali’s killing has left the community shaken and called upon the police to work around the clock to find his killers.

“His work touched many lives in the different spheres of media that he worked in. We urge the police and community to join forces in ensuring that we find the perpetrators so that an incident like this doesn’t happen again in our community.”
