Presley Chweneyagae, star of Tsotsi, dies at 40

Presley Chweneyagae, renowned for his breakout role in the Academy Award-winning film Tsotsi, has died at the age of 40.

In a statement released by his agency MLA on Tuesday, it was confirmed that the veteran actor had died, although the cause of death was not disclosed.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of one of South Africa’s most gifted and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, at the age of 40,” said Nina Morris Lee, CEO of MLA.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, extended family, colleagues, and all who knew and loved him. While we mourn the loss of an exceptional talent, we celebrate the light he brought into the world. Details regarding memorial services will be announced in due course.”

Born on 19 October 1984, in Mafikeng, North West, Chweneyagae gained international acclaim for his portrayal of a troubled youth in the 2006 drama Tsotsi, which earned an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

His film credits include More Than Just a Game, State of Violence, and African United, in addition to a prominent role in the popular TV drama The River.

On stage, his presence was commanding and transformative, with roles in Hamlet, Mark Antony in Julius Caesar, Bottom and Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Orestes in Dikeledi (an adaptation of Electra), RelativityUrban RealityJack in the BoxThe GrandballSilent VoiceKalushiCardsBeautiful Things and more.

Following the news of Chweneyagae’s passing, tributes poured in on social media, with fans and prominent figures expressing their condolences to his family.

“Heartbroken to hear of the passing of Presley Chweneyagae. A true giant of South African film and theatre, his legacy in Tsotsi, The River, and beyond will endure,” said ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula on X.

The Film and Publication Board posted: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of multi award winning stage and screen actor, Presley Chweneyagae. His passing has dimmed a brilliant light in the South African Entertainment and Film Industry.”

The South African Film & Television Awards, also added its voice, saying: “Rest in Power, Presley Chweneyagae A true legend of South African cinema. It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Presley Chweneyagae — a powerhouse performer whose talent left an indelible mark on our screens and in our hearts.”

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, also extended condolences to the Chweneyagae family.

“Presley Chweneyagae made significant contributions across various acting genres, from drama to comedy, showcasing his multifaceted talent. His dedication to his craft inspired many young actors to engage with South African narratives on both local and global stages,” said Chiloane, reflecting on Chweneyagae’s illustrious career.

“On behalf of the people of Gauteng, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Chweneyagae family, friends, and the entire performing arts industry. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Chiloane said.
