President Cyril Ramaphosa and DA leader John Steenhuisen will hold a meeting on Tuesday evening before the Cabinet lekgotla this week after public spats between senior leaders from both parties.
Following the land expropriation bill becoming law, the DA is especially incensed, saying it was not consulted on the matter and found out about it on social media.
Steenhuisen told reporters in Johannesburg on Tuesday that he had written a letter to Ramaphosa requesting the meeting.
The Presidency has responded and is working on setting up the meeting.
“The GNU provides an opportunity to have direct influence on the programme of government and implementation of a new agenda focused on inclusive growth, economic prosperity and jobs.
“For this to be possible, the two largest parties within the Government of National Unity needed to ensure that there was a consensus on government’s programme of action. Of late, this consensus has been brought into question,” he said.
Steenhuisen explained that his letter was aimed at attempting to improve the relationship between the DA and the ANC.
“I hope this will be the first step in improving the relationship and stability and restoring trust amongst coalition partners in the Government of National Unity.”
The press briefing follows a high-level DA meeting over the weekend that mostly focused on the 2026 local government elections.
