President Cyril Ramaphosa has strongly condemned the devastating massacre in Lusikisiki, which claimed the lives of 18 family members, with most of them being women.
“While we are united in our grief, we are also united in our outrage and condemnation of this excessive criminal assault which will not go unpunished,” Ramaphosa said on Tuesday.
The country was sent into shock and disbelief following the heinous act, with Police Committee chairperson Ian Cameron saying that the killing of women in the country demanded aggressive and urgent intervention.
Amidst the turmoil and fear as a result of killings, Ramaphosa has reassured the grieving families of the deceased that SAPS was fully committed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
He emphasised that SAPS has mobilised its maximum resources to ensure arrests.
“The South African Police Service has proven its effectiveness in dealing with random and organised crime and I am confident the Lusikisiki case will be added to the successes recorded recently by our police service,” the president said.
A specialised task force comprising seasoned detectives and forensic experts has been dispatched to the crime scene to support ongoing investigations.
Ramaphosa has urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Community members should therefore feel free to provide investigators with information that can help police apprehend the attackers and prepare a watertight case for our courts to process,” he said.
“Criminals will not be allowed to prevail,” he added.
Ramaphosa said he felt deeply for the families of the victims.
