President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on winning a second term with a landslide victory 84.3%.
“The Algerian National Independent Electoral Authority and all national stakeholders are also congratulated for their collective efforts in ensuring a conducive environment in which the elections were conducted,” said presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.
“The success of the elections is an expression of Algeria’s commitment to advancing democracy not only in Algeria, but on the African continent.”
While Tebboune’s opponents alleged irregularities and fraud, the Constitutional Court said this weekend that it had local voting data to settle the allegations.
According to media reports, the preliminary results issued by the National Independent Authority for Elections on Sunday gave Tebboune nearly 95% support, prompting other candidates to challenge the results in court.
After verification of the minutes of the regions and correction of the errors noted in the counting of the votes,” it lowered Tebboune’s vote share.
Ramaphosa reiterated the government’s commitment to continue to work in solidarity with the government and people of Algeria to “strengthen bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of the two countries, to build strong people-to-people ties and collaborate
in the consolidation of the African Agenda”.
