Ramaphosa implicated in Bosasa probe

Must read

The Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa received a section 7(9)notice from the Public Protector; a formal notification that a person has been implicated in an investigation by the Public Protector’s office.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane told DA leader Mmusi Maimane that Ramaphosa is implicated in her investigation into the R500,000 donation from Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson, Business Day reports.

It’s understood the president was served the notice on May 30 and given 10 days to respond. President Ramaphosa requested an extension and Mkhwebane granted an extension until 21 June 2019.

Ramaphosa further requested to cross-examine several witnesses which had testified before the Public Protector, including Maimane. “I have requested President Ramaphosa to provide the questions they would want to ask so that I can determine whether it is justifiable to allow that,” Mkhwebane said.

In his initial eight-page response to Mkhwebane, Ramaphosa explained he was informed by his adviser in September 2018 about the rumor that his son Andile Ramaphosa had received a payment of R500,000 from Bosasa (now African Global Operations), which Andile said was made for “an advisory mandate for possible business activities in some East African countries.”

On Monday, Maimane gave Mkhwebane a 48-hour deadline to release her report into allegations that Ramaphosa lied to Parliament over the Bosasa donation.
