Ramaphosa Pays Tribute To Veteran Actress Mary Twala Who Has Died At 80

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa has weighed in on the death of Mary Twala, iconic stage and television actress, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 80.

Twala died at the Netcare Park Lane Private Hospital around 11am, according to his son and popular television personality, Somizi Mhlongo.

Ramaphosa expressed his deep sadness at the passing of the veteran actor and Esteemed Member of the Order of Ikhamanga, saying the country has a lost a unique talent and an endearing human being whose performances brought to life the meaning of being a South African.


“We will miss her dearly,” said Ramaphosa.

“Like millions of South Africans, I am saddened by the passing of a great icon of our nation’s creative community; someone who was a household name and face to all of us and brought home the joys, the struggles and the humour under pressure that characterises our national life.”

The veteran entertainer is best known for roles in local movie productions such as Sarafina! and Mapantsula, and has also featured in the small screen in drama series such as Hlala Kwabafileyo and Molo Fish.


Twala has appeared on over 20 television shows, including favorites such as Generations, Muvhango, Scandal, Home Affairs, Imposter and of course, Living The Dream With Somizi.


She was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in 2019 in recognition of the versatility and longevity of her creative career.
