ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has proposed several changes to some of the party’s most strategic committees ahead of the ANC’s elective congress in December.
This is one of the latest signs yet that Ramaphosa, who has been on an anti-corruption crusade since he ascended to power in 2017, will avail himself for another term to continue the fight against corruption.
The proposed changes could also see people outside of the governing party’s national executive committee (NEC) being included in the committees to bolster the ANC’s capacity.
According to the City Press, ANC officials, who are not members of the party’s national executive committee, may also be part of the disciplinary sub-committees in a move that is seen to be driven by Ramaphosa’s faction.
The move comes after the ANC’s national working committee (NWC) adopted the proposal this week, and the changes could see some big changes to the party’s sub-committees, particularly to the national disciplinary committee and the national disciplinary committee of appeals.
With an NEC meeting scheduled for later in March, the highest decision-making committee is expected to finalise the proposed changes.
Former State Security Minister Bongani Bongo, former Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, and Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa are among the notable names that will be booted from the NDC.
Former Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, who is the current head of the NDC, will also exit the disciplinary committee.
Former Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane is also expected to be removed as head of ANC’s disciplinary committee of appeals.
According to the publication, coming into the powerful disciplinary structures are former public service and administration minister and erstwhile UN big-wig Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi and former deputy justice minister Johnny de Lange – both long-serving members of the Thabo Mbeki administration.
Former water and environmental affairs minister Lindiwe Hendricks and ex-deputy minister of provincial and local government affairs Ntombazana Botha are also included.
Both served under Mbeki.
Former Gauteng integrity commission head and erstwhile senior civil servant Ralph Mgijima, ANC head of legal affairs Krish Naidoo and SA Institute of Professional Accountants board member Karenza Millard have also been roped in.
