Strong and robust municipalities have a critical role in driving local economies, according to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Addressing lawmakers in Cape Town in response to debates on his State-of-the-Nation Address, Ramaphosa reiterated the District Development Model’s role in strengthening local economies and positioning municipalities as centres of growth and improved service delivery.
“Throughout this debate, premiers have underscored ongoing efforts in our provinces to stimulate economic activity, attract investment and foster job creation,” Ramaphosa told MPs on Thursday.
“Infrastructure development remains a cornerstone of economic vitality, with noticeable impacts on provincial GDP, local enterprises and communities.”
Ramaphosa acknowledged substantial infrastructure investments across various provinces, spanning housing, water supply, roads and other key sectors.
These initiatives not only enhanced service delivery, but also significantly contributed to job creation, he said.
“The national executive’s visits to provinces have yielded synergistic benefits, enabling the exchange of best practices and support on critical provincial matters,” Ramaphosa added.
“We’re witnessing significant financial inflows in mining, renewable energy, manufacturing, tourism and other strategic sectors.”
Ramaphosa stressed the imperative of bolstering local government capacity to deliver essential services crucial for business operations, such as water, electricity and logistical infrastructure.
He welcomed commitments from the premiers to prioritise municipal governance, capacity building and financial sustainability.
“Access to clean water, sanitation, reliable electricity, effective waste management and well-maintained municipal infrastructure isn’t just essential for communities, but also enhances the attractiveness of investment opportunities,” said Ramaphosa.
“Provincial investment conferences have already garnered substantial pledges, reflecting investor confidence.”
Ramaphosa urged premiers to extend their focus on local development to township, small town and village levels, citing successful examples of rural and eco-tourism initiatives that drive job creation, poverty alleviation and small business growth.
“By leveraging their unique economic strengths, provinces are well-positioned to stimulate growth in every corner of the country,” said Ramaphosa.
“Collaboration with traditional leaders remains integral as we forge ahead.”
