PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver the keynote address at the national Africa Day celebrations taking place at the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng on Thursday.

The event marks the commemoration of Africa Day, which honours the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) 60 years ago and its subsequent transformation into the African Union 20 years ago.

This year’s Africa Month program revolves around the theme: “Deepening the AU Vision for Unity for Africa through Prosperity, Peace, and Modernity for a Better Africa and a Better World.”

The theme underscores the importance of strengthening the African Union’s vision for unity and highlights the key pillars of prosperity, peace, and modernity as catalysts for advancing Africa’s progress.

Africa Day serves as a platform to redirect the nation’s attention towards the development of our continent, regional integration efforts, the vast opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, and the rich human, cultural, and natural heritage that Africa possesses.

The day also serves as a platform to promote the African Agenda and reinforce the institutions and policies of the African Union in pursuit of the continental blueprint, Agenda 2063.

In 1963, independent African states and liberation movements convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to establish the Organization of African Unity, the first continental institution after achieving independence.

The OAU Charter was officially adopted on May 25, 1963.
