President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is looking forward to meeting with Sudan’s Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.

The announcement follows a request for a meeting received by Ramaphosa from Sudanese Vice President Malik Agar Eyre Nganyoufa on Sunday on the developments towards peace in Sudan, the Presidency said in a statement.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the country’s army has been raging since April 2023.

The Sudanese conflict has killed thousands, displaced millions inside and outside the country and sparked warnings of famine.

Ramaphosa welcomed the briefing from Sudanese authorities and conveyed South Africa’s support for a dialogue between the conflicting factions.

He reiterated the call for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the suffering and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe, particularly impacting Sudanese women and children.
