ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula dropped a bombshell when he announced that he has no choice but to suspend ANCYL National Youth Task Team (NYTT) convenor Xola Nqola for defying his instruction by presiding over the Eastern Cape conference.
Mbalula had instructed the Youth League not to convene the Eastern Cape conference but the members in that province defied his directive and convened the conference which elected Luntu Sokutu as its provincial chair.
Mbalula accused Nqola of dividing structures and pushing the Eastern Cape provincial structure to hold a conference without following processes ahead of the ANCYL national elective conference scheduled for the weekend.
On the other hand, the newly elected ANCYL provincial secretary in the EasternCape, Bongani Mani has written to Mbalula accusing him of making every effort to prevent the group from participating in the national conference of the Youth League.
Mani accused Mbalula of “excessive intrusion into the affairs’ ‘ of the ANCYL without following relevant structures is “unwarranted and without merits”.
They said Mbalula is already working to support Collen Malatji who is eyeing the position of President.
The candidates that reached the required 20% threshold to be on the ballot for the conference are:
President: Collen Malatji – Gauteng
DP: Phumzile Mgcina- KwaZulu-Natal
Secretary General : Mntuwoxolo Ngudle – Eastern Cape
Deputy Secretary: Tsakani Shiviti- Limpopo
Treasurer: Zwelo Masilela- Mpumalanga
Other candidates would have to be nominated from the conference floor.
ANCYL members in Sedibeng have also written to Mbalula raising issues with the NYTT and its audit process.
The Eastern Cape delegates also complained, and similar issues were raised in the Western Cape.
The ANCYL Western Cape Provincial Congress Preparatory Committee (PCPC)has suspended its spokesperson and PWC member Mesuli Kama and said they were investigating his conduct. Similarly, Kama announced the suspension of PCPC coordinator Asanda Luwaca over allegations of fraud and forgery. Kama said he does not recognise this suspension.
