The SA Human Rights Commission has confirmed the launch of an investigation into the alleged racist incident which took place during a flight from Durban to Cape Town on Boxing Day.

Commission spokesperson Given Makhuvele said that while a criminal complaint has been filed with the police, its Western Cape office would probe the matter, in line with its constitutional mandate to promote equality and prevent unfair discrimination.

“The commission is deeply concerned about the persistence of racial incidents in our society, especially as we celebrate 30 years of democracy. We firmly condemn any form of racist behaviour and recognise it as a challenge we must collectively address,” Makhuvele said.

He said the commission’s social harmony through national effort initiatives facilitated constructive dialogues within communities and among stakeholders to reduce disharmony and forge a common national vision as enshrined in the constitution.

Makhuvele encouraged any passengers from the flight to share relevant information with the commission to assist the investigation.

Videos were shared on social media of SABC brand manager Nobuntu Mkhize allegedly arguing with flight attendants and demanding a drink.

Both the national broadcaster and the African National Congress have distanced themselves from the woman who invoked her position and party membership during the altercation.
