THE newly-elected Joburg council Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu, has promised to tackle all corruption and take care of the needs of the residents of Johannesburg.
Mthembu was on Wednesday elected Speak with 180 votes and pipped the DA’s Nonhlanhla Sifumba who got 68 votes.
Mthembu rejoiced and vowed to prioritise the concerns of residents starting with restoring the state of the city to its former glory.
Although the DA fielded Sifumba to challenge Mthembu, the ActionSA caucus leader received the backing of the governing coalition led by the ANC, and she became the first member of her the party to accupy this position.
Delivering her acceptance speech, Mthembu promised an era of accountability in which service delivery would take center stage.
“This is an era in which we will instil a culture of accountability and transparency, and where at every turn we will work together to ensure that the best interests of our residents anchor our efforts,” said Mthembu.
She also emphasised that she is not going to spend much time in her office, but will be moving around the city and participating in community engagements.
“The residents have the right to know how much money is budgeted and how it is going to be distributed,” she said.
Additionally, Mthembu said that as we continue to celebrate Women’s Month in South Africa, she is reminded of women who shaped our nation’s history.
