In a remarkable display of sporting prowess – South Africa’s national rugby and cricket teams – the Springboks and the Proteas have each clinched thrilling victories over England, sending waves of jubilation across the nation.
The Springboks faced off against the Three Lions in the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup – with a nail-biting match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats – sealing a dramatic victory.
The defending champions were on the brink of defeat, trailing 15-6 with just minutes to go, however a try by RG Snyman and a last-minute penalty by Handre Pollard turned the tide in favor of the Springboks, with the final score a close 16-15.
Springboks captain Siya Kolisi praised his team’s resilience, and said that while the win was narrow, it illustrated what champions are made of.
This victory sends them into a Rugby World Cup final against fellow triple champions New Zealand.
On the cricket front, the Proteas delivered an equally impressive performance against England in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The match took place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India with SA scoring a massive 399 runs for 7 wickets in 50 overs, marking the highest-ever score against England in one-day cricket.
Heinrich Klaasen was the star of the show for South Africa, scoring a sublime 109 off 67 balls. His performance, along with Marco Jansen’s unbeaten 75 off just 42 balls 9, propelled South Africa to a record-breaking victory over England by 229 runs.
The victories have sparked widespread celebrations across the country, with supporters taking to the streets to celebrate the semi-final victory against England, in what many have called a unification of South Africans, and asking for Monday to be declared a Public Holiday.
South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his pride and congratulations to the Springboks on their victory, and said that their performance delighted and inspired the entire nation, whether they were on the field, the bench or in the coaches’ box, as he wished the team well for their upcoming final.
