State funeral declared for Mboweni

An official state funeral category two has been declared for former finance minister Tito Mboweni.

The funeral service will be held at Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen, Limpopo, on Saturday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast at all flag stations from Wednesday morning until Saturday night.

Mboweni, 65, died in on Saturday in hospital surrounded by his family.

He was democratic South Africa’s first labour minister from 1994 to 1999, and served as the SA Reserve Bank governor for decade from 1999.

From 2018 to 2021, Mboweni was the finance minister.

“President Ramaphosa reiterates his condolences to the family and friends of Dr Mboweni who served the nation as an activist, economic policy innovator and champion of labour rights, with a sharp focus on fiscal discipline and economic transformation,” the president’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said in a statement on Tuesday night.

The funeral service, which will start at 10am, will feature ceremonial elements provided by the South African Police Service.

South Africans continue to mourn the passing of Mboweni, whose death has been described as sudden.

His last public engagement was reportedly at the University of Limpopo.
