A 27-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the rape of two nurses in Ga-Chuene, Limpopo, and is linked to several other cases.
The arrest, made at the suspect’s residence in Feke village, Ga-Maja, also recovered a firearm and items believed to be connected to other crimes.
Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba, speaking at a media briefing alongside Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, confirmed the arrest on Sunday.
The suspect faces charges including robbery and possession of stolen property, with a scheduled appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 20, 2025.
“The suspect is facing multiple charges, including possession of stolen property and will appear at the Polokwane Magistrate Court on Monday, 20 January 2025,” said Ramathuba.
“Investigations are ongoing, and additional charges will be laid as evidence is finalised.”
Ramathuba praised the collaborative effort of law enforcement in apprehending the suspect swiftly, including the recovery of a stolen 9mm pistol and various other items such as 9 live rounds of ammunition, laptops, smart cellphones, a panga, and cash, all suspected to be linked to other crimes in the area.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect’s involvement in multiple serious cases within the Lebowakgomo policing area, including incidents at Chuene Clinic, Ga-Molepo, and Fynbos Village.
Ramathuba pointed out the community’s important role in supporting law enforcement efforts and ensuring safety, particularly for healthcare workers.
“The attack on Ga-Chuene Clinic was not only a violation of the nurses and staff but also a direct assault on healthcare services in our province,” she said.
She added that psychological support has been provided to the affected nurses, with ongoing efforts to enhance security measures at healthcare facilities across the province.
“We remain committed to justice and the safety of our citizens,” Ramathuba said.
“We are also committed to ensuring that all healthcare workers feel safe in their places of work. To that end, we are working closely with the MEC for Health, Ms Mashego, and the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Mathye, to strengthen security measures at clinics and hospitals across the province.”
