Suspended Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni, Ashley Mthunzi has passed away, following a short but unconfirmed illness.

The controversial CEO’s widow Lerato Mthunzi announced his passing on social media, with the Gauteng Department of Health confirming that Mthunzi has died on Tuesday.

Lerato shared the funeral arrangements and said the ceremony would be held on Saturday morning in Winchester Hills.

Mthunzi was placed on precautionary suspension in August 2022 after an investigation into allegations concerning improper procurement and payment of service providers at Tembisa Hospital, revealed that he allegedly signed contracts that went to companies that had no experience in health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

His investigation followed allegations made by whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, who was murdered on August 23 2021.

According to Deokana’s report, she had contacted the chief financial officer (CFO) of Tembisa Hospital, and discussed her findings at the hospital, which included companies that did not even have formal addresses.

“On 3 of August 2022, during an analysis of payments run, it was identified that the greatest value of transactions that were on the payment run was for Tembisa Hospital (R104 million of the R166 million that was due for release). This immediately caused alarm, so an analysis was done of the transactions payable under Tembisa Hospital. On further analysis, it was identified that most of the transactions were below the R500 000 quotation value,” Deokaran reported.

Despite the suspension and allegations, however, the departmental spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said that the department was grateful for Mthunzi’s work as CEO and learned with sadness of his untimely death.

“The department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Dr Mthunzi as they navigate through this difficult period of mourning,” Modiba said.
