The three Diepsloot community leaders arrested last week during violent protests at the information settlement have been freed on R500 bail each.

Lefa Nkala, Loyiso Toyiya, and Jack Hlongwane were arrested and charged with public violence, destruction of property, intimidation, damage to essential infrastructure among others as a result of violent protests in Diepsloot where the residents were protesting over rising incidents of crime in the area.

The men are expected back in court on 17 August.

Tensions have been high in the area since last week as residents took to the streets to express their concerns regarding escalating crime which they believe was committed by undocumented foreigners.

The community has also been calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to come and talk to them and to put a stop to the crime in the area.
