The ANC Caucus in Johannesburg has condemned the actions of some Nancefield hostel residents who stormed the Klipspruit City Power Offices demanding electricity be turned on.
“These people caused untold damage to City Power property, stole equipment and material including damaging property of City Power employees,” the ANC said.
“While people have a right to protest in cases where government is not delivering services; it is not acceptable that property must be destroyed and people must be attacked.”
It is clear that the ‘so-called‘ protestors were clearly not there for service delivery issues but to engage in criminal activities, said the ANC.
The ANC caucus said “stealing was their main aim” and law enforcement agencies must step in to arrest these “criminals.”
“Some of the Nancefield Hostel residents cannot be a law unto themselves and be involved in illegal activities in the name of service delivery protests.”
The ANC Johannesburg caucus said it will engage with the leadership of Nancefield hostel to deal with this “unacceptable behavior of some of the residents,” adding that will follow up on the matter with the relevant police station.
