Co-hosts Uganda took a step closer to qualifying for the 2024 African Nations Championship quarter-finals, while South Africa continued their unbeaten start.
In the first of two games taking place at the Mandela National Stadium on Monday, South Africa kept their CHAN 2024 title hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Guinea.
Bafana Bafana got off to a flying start when Neo Maema opened the scoring after just seven minutes, but they were pegged back before half-time by Moussa Camara’s 37th-minute equaliser.
However, Thabiso Kutumela (54′) secured the win for Molefi Ntseki’s side early in the second half to take them level with Algeria (2nd) in third place in Group C.
Then in the late kick-off, Uganda made it back-to-back wins as they beat Niger 2-0 in Kampala, with the goals coming from Allan Okello (25′) and Joel Sserunjogi (56′).
The Cranes moved to the top of the group on six points, two ahead of the Fennec Foxes and South Africa.
