UN and ICJ add their voices to calls against Israel’s military offensive in Rafah

Must read

The United Nations (UN) and International Court of Justice (ICJ) have called out Israel for the Zionist State’s failure to de-escalate its war on Gaza as well as its offensive in Rafah where millions of Palentinians have sought refuge.

UN leader Antonio Guterres said that Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah, where more than 1.4 million Palestinians are crowded together in tent cities, was “the core of the humanitarian aid operation” in the Palestinian territory.

“An all-out Israeli offensive on the city would not only be terrifying for more than a million Palestinian civilians sheltering there; it would put the final nail in the coffin of our aid programmes,” Guterres said.

Guterres’s comments come after the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reiterated that his country was intent on a ground invasion in Rafah, in its bid for “total victory” over Hamas.

Israel is due to report to the ICJ on Monday on the progress it has made in implementing the top UN court’s order issued last month, on preventing genocide in Gaza, following a case brought by South Africa.

Furthermore, the UN aid agency in Gaza may be forced to close down, leaving millions of Palestinians without any aid, after several countries put a freeze on funding the organisation, after allegations that some staff members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees were involved in the October 7 attacks on Israel.

Meanwhile, International Court of Justice (ICJ) concluded its six-day hearings into the legality of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967 on Monday, with Israel due to report to the court on the progress it has made in implementing the top court’s order of preventing genocide in the region.

At least 29,782 people have been killed and 70,043 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from the October 7 attacks stands at 1,139.
