The City of Ekurhuleni is set to make a critical decision regarding the future of EMPD Deputy Chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, following renewed allegations of misconduct at the Madlanga Commission.
This follows an urgent motion tabled by council members, with voting delayed pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
While the council typically does not deliberate on the employment status of senior officials, Mkhwanazi is expected to hear his fate by a decision expected before the end of the day on Thursday.
A report from the city of Ekurhuleni is expected to be tabled before council detailing claims that Mkhwanazi played a role in the unauthorised transfer of EMPD blue lights to the private vehicles of politically-connected businessman and attempted murder accused, Vusimusi ‘Cat’ Matlala.
Speaking on behalf of the city of Ekurhuleni, Phakamile Mbengashe confirmed Mkhwanazi was an item on the city’s agenda to be deliberated on and decided.
“The item is on the council agenda. It belongs to councillors now, and we wouldn’t want to speculate on the outcome. It will be debated thoroughly, and the council will resolve on a course of action,” he said.
A report is expected to be issued by the city, and Mbengashe said it stemmed from allegations raised during the Madlanga Commission, which prompted the executive mayor to initiate an internal audit investigation.
“Council is the highest decision-making body in the city, and they will decide on the best course of action depending on the contents of that report.”
