Hawks arrest 23 over alleged graft in Mpumalanga school repair contracts

The Hawks in Mpumalanga have arrested 23 suspects, including senior education officials, over alleged corruption involving emergency school renovation tenders that led to the defrauding of R114 million from the provincial education department. 

More arrests are expected as the investigation widens to other government departments, Major General Nico Gerber said during a press briefing on Sunday. He said 41 suspects had been targeted.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will present the budget on Wednesday at a time when government arguably has more fiscal breathing room than it has had in years — possibly even since before the pandemic, and perhaps since before the global financial crisis.

How he chooses to use that space will signal whose interests are being prioritised, especially in an election year.

The Nkabinde Inquiry is expected to hear further technical and forensic evidence related to the long-disbanded Cato Manor organised crime unit when it resumes on Tuesday.

The inquiry has heard allegations from witnesses that some of the scenes of cases linked to the controversial unit were staged and firearms planted to bolster claims of self-defence.
