Whoopi Goldberg and Leleti Khumalo reunite to celebrate 30 years of ‘Sarafina!’

ORIGINAL Sarafina! stars, including Whoopi Goldberg and Leleti Khumalo, reassembled on Wednesday night for a special showing of the movie at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary.

The iconic musical drama was based on the 1987 musical of the same name by Mbongeni Ngema and written by Ngema and William Nicholson and directed by Darrell Roodt.

It also had a star cast which included Khumalo, Miriam Makeba, John Kani, Ngema, and EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg.

To mark the anti-apartheid milestone, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the South African Consulate General in New York collaborated to see it through.

Speaking at the screening, Goldberg said, “It’s abundant to be here. I look at Leleti, I look at Anant and I think, wow we did do this! I’m accepting old and each brace of years there’s an anniversary and this is a 30-year celebration. I am honored to be breath to bless it.”

She added: “Keep talking to the kids because they are activity to fix it, they are activity accomplish it happen, they are activity to accomplish change happen. They are not polite, they are not activity to angle while they see anything amiss and that’s what happened in the film, they alone got annoyed and answered no more.”
