The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has formally tabled a motion of no confidence against National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, accusing her of placing party political interests above parliament’s constitutional obligations by refusing to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s court bid to halt the Section 89 impeachment process linked to the Phala Phala matter.
The motion, submitted on Friday by EFF Parliamentary Chief Whip Nontando Nolutshungu to Deputy Speaker Annelie Lotriet, is brought in the name of EFF leader Julius Malema and seeks Didiza’s removal from office in terms of Section 52(4) of the Constitution.
“We write to you in terms of Rule 28 of the Rules of the National Assembly, read together with Section 52(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, to formally table a Motion of No Confidence in the Speaker of the National Assembly,” Nolutshungu wrote.
