South Africa is bracing for what could be one of its largest coordinated protest actions in recent years, with thousands of demonstrators expected to converge on major cities on Tuesday as anti-illegal immigration groups intensify pressure on government to clamp down on undocumented foreign nationals.
Government says it is fully prepared for the nationwide demonstrations, having cancelled all police leave, placed the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) on standby to protect critical infrastructure and mobilised private security companies as part of heightened security measures amid fears the protests could descend into violence.
The demonstrations are being spearheaded by organisations including March and March, which has issued an ultimatum demanding that undocumented immigrants leave South Africa by 30 June.
