The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced that its Chief Executive Officer, Reginald Demana, has resigned and will leave the agency at the end of August after serving for more than three years.
SANRAL said on Thursday that Demana, who joined the agency in January 2023, would step down with effect from 31 August.
The agency said Demana had resigned “to take up a new opportunity that aligns with his long-term career ambitions”.

His departure comes after a tenure that included the rollout of several major national road infrastructure projects and efforts to improve SANRAL’s financial position.
According to SANRAL, Demana was appointed with a mandate to “accelerate development of key national road corridor infrastructure projects and stabilize SANRAL’s toll portfolio”.
During his tenure, SANRAL made progress on projects including the R573 Moloto Road, the N2 Wild Coast Road, upgrades to the N2 and N3 in KwaZulu-Natal, the N2 Corridor in Mpumalanga and the N1 South Corridor.

The agency also pointed to the resolution of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) e-toll matter, following government’s decision to absorb the project’s debt, as well as the approval of an increased borrowing limit of R16.5 billion until March 2028, including a R7 billion government-guaranteed facility from the New Development Bank.
“The Board will begin the recruitment process for a new CEO and will announce an Acting CEO while that process is underway,” SANRAL said.
It said the acting CEO would be announced no later than 17 July to ensure a smooth handover before Demana’s departure.
“The Board thanks Mr Demana for his service and contribution to SANRAL and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the agency said.
