The Western Cape High Court on Friday ruled in favour of President Cyril Ramaphosa in his urgent application to temporarily halt public hearings by Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee.
In a majority judgment, the court granted Ramaphosa an interim interdict preventing the committee from proceeding with public hearings until his judicial review application has been finalised.
Ramaphosa launched the urgent application to pause the parliamentary inquiry into his handling of the theft of foreign currency from his private Phala Phala farm.
The president wants the committee’s public hearings placed on hold pending the outcome of his application to review and set aside the Independent Panel report, which found prima facie evidence that he may have a case to answer over the Phala Phala matter.
The ruling does not determine the merits of Ramaphosa’s review application, which will be considered separately from 2 to 4 September.
