The City of Johannesburg’s mayor Herman Mashaba will soon announce the renaming of some of Johannesburg’s well-known roads in a bid to build an inclusive society and celebrate the 25th year of democracy.

The popular William Nicol Drive will be named after struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela while Rivonia Road will be named after ANC stalwart and former Rivonia trialist Andrew Mlangeni.

The renaming of these roads in Johannesburg was processed late last year by the City of Johannesburg in consultation with the public, the Gauteng provincial government and the national graphic names councils for a final decision.

Inside Politics has seen the names of the new roads, which includes, among others, the renaming of the Ben Schoeman Highway, the main freeway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, which will be renamed the Moses Kotane Freeway.

Kotane was the former secretary general of the SA Communist Party between 1939 and 1978.
