GAUTENG Health MEC Bandile Masuku has been fired following the latest Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report that was presented to Premier David Makhura looking into Covid19 tender irregularities.
“I have decided as the premier of the province to discharge Dr Masuku as the health MEC. The leadership he showed during COVID19 is undisputable but I have to act against him,” said Makhura.
Makhura said on Friday, October 2, he received another updated report from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) pertaining to the role of the MEC for Health, Masuku, who was placed on special leave in July 2020
“The SIU found that Dr. Masuku has failed to execute his functions in compliance with the Constitution and the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). Based on this conclusion, the SIU recommended that I take administrative action against MEC Masuku,” said Makhura.
“Based on the SIU’s findings and recommendation thereof, the course of administrative action I’m taking is to discharge Dr. Bandile Masuku from his responsibilities as the MEC for Health. I have taken cognisance of the contribution that MEC Masuku has made in improving the Department of Health since his appointment and appreciate the leadership he provided during Gauteng’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“Accordingly, I have further decided that I will only appoint the new MEC for Health once the SIU has reached finality on its investigation into allegations of corruption and collusion.”
