ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte has confirmed that the party has managed to register 4 468 wards candidates for upcoming local government elections, who include LGBTI+ community, people living with disabilities, 46% women and 25% youth.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Duarte added that the ANC has also registered candidates for the 257 municipalities.
“The ANC has successfully completed the process of registering all its councillor candidates for local government elections that are scheduled to take place on November 1,” said Duarte.
“We can confirm that all our candidates were registered with the IEC on September 21.”
Earlier, the ANC said it was doing all in its power to resolve the concerns that are being raised by its members in various provinces and municipalities.
Some members were threatening not to vote in the upcoming local government elections.
Multitudes protested outside Luthuli House in Johannesburg against the party’s councillor candidate selection process.
The ANC members bitterly complained that the process was fraught with corruption and accused their Provincial List Committees of failing to help them.
Previously, the party missed the deadline to submit candidate lists in more than 90 municipalities, causing a short-lived crisis.
However, following a decision by the Constitutional Court not to postpone the elections to next year and the IEC’s announcement that it had reopened registration for candidates, the party was given a lifeline.
