SOUTH African songstress Kelly Khumalo allegedly fired a shot which killed former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa in Vosloorus, Gauteng, on the night of October 26 2014.
This emerged on Wednesday after forensic officer Thabo Mosia took the stand at the Pretoria High Court in Pretoria as the trial against the five men accused of killing Senzo continues.
Advocate Malesela Teffo, the lawyer representing four of the five accused, advocate Malesela Teffo, told the court that he will bring an eyewitness who will testify that Meyiwa was shot and killed by Khumalo.
“A witness, not just a witness, will testify that Senzo Robert Meyiwa was allegedly shot by Nonhlanhla Kelly Khumalo, by mistake as it is alleged,” Teffo told the court.
Teffo went on: “The same eyewitness will further testify that the firearm used to shoot Senzo Robert Meyiwa by Kelly Khumalo came with Longwe Twala and the firearm is a revolver. Any response?”
Mosia said he had “no comment”.
Meyiwa was gunned down in October 2014 at Khumalo’s family home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
At the time, Tumelo Waka Madlala, a friend of Meyiwa’s who said he was at the house during the attempted robbery, claimed the goalkeeper was shot while trying to stop the intruders, who had demanded cellphones and money from people inside the home.
Muzi Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli have been charged with premeditated murder.
Other charges include attempted murder, robbery and the possession of an illegal firearm.
All of the accused men have pleaded not guilty.
The trial continues.
