PHUTI MOSOMANE
EKURHULENI regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina has withdrawn his candidacy for the highly contested position of ANC Treasurer-General.
Masina’s withdrawal now leaves Bejani Chauke, Gwen Ramokgopa and Pule Mabe in the running for Treasurer-General position.
His withdrawal is strategically aimed at boosting Mabe’s chances of becoming the party’s Treasurer-General, provided he sways Gauteng delegates to support former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize for the position of ANC President.
“We have been in discussions with Pule Mabe. We are like-minded individuals. We both have the capacity to [contest successfully] but we thought we should combine our support,” said Masina.
“We agreed that Pule Mabe will vote for Dr. Zweli Mkhize for President, Paul Mashatile for deputy President, Stan Mathabatha for Chairperson, Nomvula Mokonyane for first deputy Secretary-General and Ronalda Nalumango for second deputy Secretary-General.”
Masina, a key figure in the party’s RET faction, resigned last month as ANC councillor in Ekurhuleni.
