CYRIL Ramaphosa has been re-elected ANC president despite key provinces such as North West, Limpopo and Gauteng turning against him at an eleventh-hour.
Ramaphosa, who faces allegations of money laundering for keeping foreign currency in a sofa at his luxurious game farm in Bela Bela, Limpopo, defeated former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize by 2,476 votes to 1,897.
His dramatic re-election puts him in pole position to lead the governing party’s campaign during the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Former ANC Treasurer-General, Paul Mashatile, who was not included on Ramaphosa’s final slate, emerged as Deputy President.
Mashatile, a former chairperson of the party in Gauteng, is now the front-runner to become the country’s State President in the event that Ramaphosa is forced out of power over the Phala Phala scandal.
Transport Minister and former ANC Youth League leader Fikile Mbalula was elected to the powerful position of Secretary-General.
