‘Load shedding is a threat to national security’ – Kubayi

PHUTI MOSOMANE

ANC head of economic transformation commission Mmamoloko Kubayi says delegates agreed that loadshedding is a threat to national security and stability in the country.

Kubayi was addressing the media at the ANC’s 55th national elective conference.

“Delegates agreed that loadshedding is crippling the economy and affecting social stability and national security,” Kubayi said.

She said delegates spent considerable time discussing ways of how to improve the performance of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), particularly Eskom.

On energy and just transition, Kubayi said:

“We acknowledge that there is a need to implement a just-energy transition at a pace that will not cripple the economy.”

Kubayi said delegates acknowledged the need to transition from high-carbon to low-carbon.

She said delegates also agreed that Eskom should be run efficiently and be allowed to play its role in the development of the country and its economy.

Views expressed at the commissions are still subject to adoption by delegates.

The adoption of proposed resolutions will take place on the 5 of January through an online platform.

“Just Energy Transition must be at a pace and cost that the economy can afford. Understanding that we have communities and workers that must be protected,” she said.

Earlier, Eskom announced that stage 6 loadshedding will be implemented from 20:00 on Tuesday until 05:00 Wednesday morning.

Stage 4 loadshedding will resume at 05:00 on Wednesday morning until further notice.

“The breakdown of 6 generating units during the day has necessitated the escalation in the loadshedding stage,” the power utility said in a statement.
