A GAS tanker from Infinite Logistics burst into flames after colliding into a low bridge on Hospital Road in Boksburg on Saturday morning, 24 December 2022.

Ten people are reported to have been killed.

The explosion resulted in 15 fatalities, injuring approximately 50 people.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services say several people were critically wounded.

It is suspected that the gas tanker driver failed to notice the bridge was too low for his vehicle and proceeded to pass.

It crashed onto the roof of the bridge, causing it to compress.

Before bursting into flames, it could be heard leaking gas at high pressure.

The OR Tambo Memorial Hospital, which is close to where the explosion occurred, has been damaged.

Infinite Group’s director David de Agrelia said in a statement: “Infinite deeply regrets the very sad and unfortunate loss of life and injuries sustained by all involved parties and we wish to offer our sincere condolences to all of the aggrieved families. Our thoughts are with all persons affected and injured as a result of the tragic accident.”

“The driver that was involved in today’s unfortunate even is currently receiving medical attention in hospital for injuries sustained during the event. He is, unfortunately, unable to comment at this time but Infinite Management will ensure to interview him as soon as reasonably possible in order for us, and the investigation team, to be provided with the relevant information and answers he may have.”

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has visited the site of the gas tanker explosion in Boksburg.

“This is a sad day. We send our deepest condolences. One family has lost four members. It is a sad moment,” said Lesufi.

“The driver of the truck is alive and hospitalized. He is South African. The truck was moving from Richards Bay to Botswana. We don’t know how the truck ended up in that area.”

The incident will be investigated, said Tania Campbell, the mayor of Ekurhuleni, the municipality which includes Boksburg.

“The disaster management cluster is on-site assisting the victims of this tragedy and assessing the cause of the accident,” she said.

“On behalf of the city, the office of the executive mayor commits itself to assisting all role-players in ensuring that a comprehensive investigation takes place and those who are liable are brought to book.”
